Scholarship Deadlines Approaching!

Applications for the Student Volunteer Scholarship are due no later than March 31. This annual award recognizes outstanding student participation as a service volunteer (canteen attendant, donor aide, etc.) at Miller-Keystone Blood Center, by a graduating high school senior.  Applications for the High School Blood Donor Recruitment Scholarship are due no later than April 30. This annual award recognizes high school blood drive chairpersons for their efforts in stimulating interest and increasing the available blood supply in our region. Due to the heightened awareness
of Influenza cases, if you are experiencing flu like symptoms, or have been exposed to anyone with the same symptoms, please consult your doctor before donating blood.
Miller-Keystone Blood Center Management continues to evaluate the most current reports from the CDC, PA Department of Health and other State and Federal agencies. At this time, the H1N1 Flu Outbreak is considered a National Public Health Emergency. New Flu Victim: Blood Supply

The Wall Street Journal .  The swine-flu pandemic is creating unexpected problems for the nation's blood supply—shrinking the number of blood donors and raising questions about whether the flu can be spread through a transfusion. "We are very worried about the impact of swine flu," says Marsha Springel, donor resources manager at Miller-Keystone Blood Center. "Right now we have an ample supply, but if this hits as big as they are predicting, we may lose a large proportion of our donor base." For full story, click here.
